The
Orthodox Celts, a band from Belgrade, Serbia, play traditional
Irish and rock music. Since their founding in 1993, they have
been one of the most popular bands in Serbia, despite their
genre of music. For a band playing Irish music to be so popular
as The Orthodox Celts is quite unique, not only in their home
country, but in the whole of Southeastern Europe. Their music
has led to a popularization of Irish and Celtic music and
other aspects of Irish and Celtic culture in Serbia, especially
Guinness beer.
The
band started their career with traditional Irish songs and,
gradually, introduced more and more of their own material.
All their songs are in the English language (or as they say,
in the Irish language), but the group has composed some purely
instrumental songs as well. In addition to albums, the band
has released several popular videos. The Orthodox Celts have
had several sold out tours and concerts inside and outside
of their own country. It is a well known tradition in Belgrade
to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a large concert featuring
The Orthodox Celts.
The
Orthodox Celts, will be celebrating 20 years together in 2012...
While they continue to sell out all over Europe, and have
a large Irish/American following, they have never performed
live in America.
